Lost in the library - My 'go tos'

Updated: May 14, 2019

Do you ever get that feeling when you're standing in the middle of the library, you have your card warmed up and ready to go, and you approach the computer to do a search, but you come up blank. You're thinking, "Man, I just want to read...something...something good. But what?"

If you haven't had this experience, then I applaud you. You must already have a 'go to' list. But for those of you who have had this (as have I) or if you are just mildly interested in the books I like, then read on...

There are some books that just 'do it' for me, no matter what. If I'm bored, they excite me. If I'm sad, they cheer me up. If I'm in a reflective mood, they help me reflect. And so on. One book, or series of books that fits this category is:

The Thomas Marlowe adventures by Chris Priestley.

Titles in the series include:

Death and the Arrow

The White Rider

Redwulf's Curse

These might seem like strange titles for books that fit the bill as I described above. However, they contain all the things I like in a novel: history, adventure, mystery, a brave young hero and all the loose ends wrapped up. Not to mention that they are set in 1700s London. I love reading about this time period!

A Brief Synopsis: Tom Marlowe lives with his father in 1700s London. He is an apprentice at his father's printing shop, the Lamb and the Lion. Tom has a good friendship with one of his father's clients, a retired explorer and historian, Dr. Josiah Harker. Throughout the series of books, Tom and Dr. Harker seek to solve certain mysteries that involve murder, thievery and blackmail.

Again, I know it seems rather odd that these books would cheer me up or help me reflect, but the characters are engaging and real, the stories both entertaining and informative about the times and the language structure and style makes for easy reading. Give them a go! And if you don't like them...well, check out my other 'go tos' in my next blog. :)

Happy reading!

K :)
