I love that moment where, purely by chance, you pick up a book from the library shelf (or, more often than not in my case, from a bookshop shelf) and as you're reading the back, you're like, "I wanna read this!"
Better yet, the book is actually good! Amazing even. To the point where you want to read it again and you're not regretting using your library card (or, again in my case, my eftpos card).
This is what happened when I picked up the following book from my local Paperplus. This was back in the day when I had money to burn, and what else do you spend your extra money on if it's not on books?
So, for those of you looking for something to read next, hoping for that 'moment' where you actually find something good, check out the following...
A Brief History of Montmaray
by Michelle Cooper
Haven't heard of it? Neither had I. But the title itself got me intrigued. Here is the snyopsis in my own words:
"Sophie FitzOsborne is a modern day princess - living in the kingdom of Montmaray, a tiny, dilipidated island not far from Europe, with all of about three subjects. Her uncle, King John, is completely mad. Her cousin, Veronica, is highly intellectual, beautiful and does not suffer fools. Her little sister, Henry, is the black sheep of the family. The little village is barely inhabited and a boat arrives every month with fresh supplies.
The royal family are royal in title only. The three princesses cook, clean and generally keep up the running of the castle, which is not so slowly sinking into disrepair. Gone are the fineries from yesteryear. It is now 1936 and the world is on the brink of war.
The book is written as a journal, through the eyes of Sophie. She faithfully records events that happen on the island over the course of about four months, including the perils of two strangers arriving on the island, threatening the safety of their little sanctuary."
If you love historical fiction, plucky young women who can look after themselves and island kingdoms with crumbling castles, then grab a copy of this book. I'd go so far as to say it's a modern classic (only having been published in 2008).
I won't spoil the ending for you, but I could do with a sequel! (UPDATE: There are two sequels!! How did I miss this? Will get my hands on them and keep you posted for how they turn out.)
Happy reading,
K:)
